Just Another Day

If you surf around the blogs today you'll notice there aren't many Yankee fans. In fact, I couldn't find one. Blog after blog cursing the curse. Screw the Yankees. Damn them to hell. Burn them at the stake. If there are Yankee loyals left, they weren't coming out to play.

Not today.

Here in New York City, the mood was quite somber. With the exception of Met fans, who seemed as if they just came off a week long of the best sex with the hottest porn star, everyone else was silent. I, myself, have been slowly going through the different stages of denial.

First there was anger. Last night I came close to starting a war with some blog alliance that Copygodd writes for. I was pissed. Things were about to get heated. I could see the crowd of onlookers slowly making their way to the circle chanting, "fight fight fight."

Growing up, whenever there was a good old fashioned fight, half the crowd would be chanting profanities while the other half scoped the area for that one asshole who would break it up before it got any good. Last night, Copygodd was that asshole. But I'm glad he did because it would have gotten real ugly. Maybe we can pick it up again come sweeps week, after all, statistically blog wars are great for site hits.

Second was depression. I spent all day today dragging my sorry ass around the office, slurring my speech on the phone, saying things like, "I dunno" and "whatever" constantly. I mean, whatever, it sucked.

Next up is despair. I'm kind of looking forward to despair because it's got this great sense of lonliness attached to it. I think I'll take a trip up to my roof and scream out, "why God why? Spare the Yankees and take me instead! Damn you! If there is no Yankee world series then there is no air. Is that what you want to do God? Take my air? Is that fair Lord? Is it fair? Is it fair that you now have thousands of Red Sox fans screaming wicked this and wicked that, all the while I'm left here helpless with not a breath in my heart?"

I dunno. It's a thought.

Whatever.

Christ - get used to losing; the rest of us are.

Speaking as a SF Giants fan, I must second Mr. Mulgrew. But since I already got my shots in yesterday, and you have now succeeded in making me feel somewhat bad for your sorry ass, I will leave it at that.

Take the weekend as a break from that nasty ol' TV and spend some quality time organizing your many Africa trip photos! :-)

Fat Guy, I feel for you man, but at the same I was able to realize what a great historical moment that was. It sucks but not much one can do. Go Cardinals!!

Man, I really do feel your pain. I try to extend my empathy all the way down from Cloud Nine, which I can't seem to escape since... sorry, I don't mean to rub it in.
The Daily News cover was harsh. But don't you think the editors missed a great opportunity to evoke one of their greatest headlines after game 6? "Schilling to NY: Shut Up." I mean, that would have been hysterical... geez, there I go again.
It's probably small consolation, but wasn't the narrative of the ALCS, any allegiances to either of the teams aside, completely compelling? The valiant, hopeless struggle of the injured star pitcher in game 1, the deepening agony and humiliation of games 2 and 3; the exquisite tension of games 4 and 5 as they went on to record-breaking length, finally ended by the mighty bat of David Ortiz; the never-been-done-before Sox win in game 6; the glorious redemption of Johnny Damon in... damn, somebody shut me up. Sorry.
Anyway, we can certainly agree that the Yankees are an awesome bunch of ballplayers, and I'm willing to lay the blame on Kevin Brown. And Vazquez, of course. Brown and Vazquez. And Rivera, for the blown saves. Oh, and Rodriguez, who would have left Jeter in scoring position if it hadn't been for... whoops. Sorry again.
And as for the sight of the Red Sox fans shouting down their Yankee counterparts, in Yankee Stadium for chrissakes, and the Red Sox themselves celebrating on sacred ground while the Yankees skulked off to... shee-it, I just can't help myself.
See you next year.

yeah, on second thought (and beer-free), that came out a little wrong...

Posted by: copygodd | Oct 23, 2004 11:51:43 PM

If only I could follow the games with beer in hand -- surfing the blogs for Red Sox news at one in the morning is a procrastination device to help me ignore writing deadlines. I even had to follow WS game 1 by running out to the car during intermissions between acts of an opera I was reviewing. The plus side? Not getting to drink and celebrate when the Sox win is your best insurance against getting shot by the Boston police.
